From the early days of ragtime to today's eclectic mix of jazz, funk, and classical, the neighborhood has been a hotbed of music-making. The legendary pianist Teddy Wilson was born and raised in Kensington, and many other renowned jazz musicians of the 20th century, such as Thelonious Monk, Fats Waller, and Bud Powell, made their mark in the area. As a result, the neighborhood is home to a plethora of venues devoted to piano music, such as the Prospect Park Bandshell, which hosts regular concerts throughout the year. The nearby Brooklyn Conservatory of Music also offers classes and private lessons in a variety of instruments, including piano. Kensington, Brooklyn, NYC has a rich piano music history. In the 1930s, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music was established, providing a music education to many local students. During the 1940s, jazz pianist, Eddie Heywood, moved to Kensington, where he opened a music school and taught many local students. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music flourished, providing many students in the area with a quality music education. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a new wave of jazz pianists emerged from Kensington, such as Barry Harris, who developed the Bebop style of jazz piano. Today, Kensington is home to many jazz clubs and venues, where many of the best jazz pianists from around the world perform.
