Bushwick, Brooklyn, has a rich history of keyboard and piano music. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, piano music was the primary entertainment in homes and gathering places. Pianos and organs were staples in Vaudeville theaters that appeared after 1910. This included The Bushwick Theater on Broadway between Palmetto and Woodbine, rivaling the Manhattan Palace Theater. The Alhambra Theatre, located on Knickerbocker Ave, featured an organ built in 1925 for over $18,000. Throughout the 20th century, demographics changed from primarily European to including Latin American, African, and Caribbean cultures. Ragtime, jazz, and blues piano, as well as Latin piano and other world musical influences, accompanied the rising diversity. In the 70s, 80s, and 90s, amidst a rough economic climate, underground Hip Hop groups like Black Moon emerged featuring jazzy Fender Rhodes piano chords on cult classics like Who Got The Props. For decades, Bushwick has now hosted a thriving musical and creative community. Pianos abound in the homes and local hangs. Recently the number and size of popular music venues have grown. Today you can catch the sounds of Jazz piano at Ornithology Jazz club.
